Anchos is a Southwestern style Cantina where my oldest Son Jacob works. He's been there since he was 17 and worked his way up from a dishwasher to now one of the head cooks & expediters. In addition, he's currently attending Culinary school at age 20. Can you tell I'm a proud Mom? What's so special about Anchos you ask? It's a restaurant I happen to frequent since it opened in 1989. We've taken our babies there since they were wee little ones (they grew up eating Anchos food!), had celebrations there, introduced many friends and out of town family to it and to this day, it is our favorite restaurant EVER...all of ours. Last night Jacob made the Anchos ever famous Ranchero Sauce for us at home. Anchos has Steak Ranchero on their specials board daily. They also have fresh fish daily, which depends on what's in season. My husband and Son get the Steak Ranchero practically every single time we go (It's a very large piece of grilled skirt steak topped generously with the sauce). If they have Alaskan Halibut, my favorite fish, I get that with Ranchero Sauce smothering it. My youngest Son, the pickiest eater of us all gets chicken soft tacos...with a side of Ranchero Sauce. People, it's THAT GOOD. I started looking for pictures on the internet yesterday of their Steak Ranchero so you could get a visual of the dish. In doing so, I was pleasantly surprised by pictures I have never seen of my Son cooking during a catering event. This one was a very large scale event for Kaiser Hospital. He usually caters events as the only cook. On this day, there were several. It's his favorite part of the job. Their style of cooking is done over mesquite wood and the smell is enough to make anyone hungry. When you drive up to the restaurant, white mesquite smoke billows softly out of the top of the restaurant. You can barely wait to get a seat and dig in on the freshly made tortillas made right there in the middle of the restaurant. Once seated, you are greeted almost immediately with homemade chips and salsa. The dining area is one big open seating room and is usually loud with people enjoying their time there. So many people who are regulars at this establishment are greeted by one of the owners Pepe or Dean with warm smiles and hugs. Over the years, there have been mixed reviews by people about this restaurant. One of the biggest misconceptions is they consider it a Mexican Restaurant, even though right on the building it says Anchos Southwest Grill & Bar. My husband is from Mexico and I have had the extreme pleasure of eating my Mother-in-laws incredible home cooking. Anchos is totally different on almost all aspects. If you go in with that in mind and don't expect authentic Mexican cuisine, you'll appreciate the natural Mesquite flavors of pretty much everything that is made on the menu, including their fire roasted salsa. With all of that said, our dinner last night was AH-MAZE-ING! Jacob did a great job with the sauce and our halibut was cooked perfectly (although I wish it was cooked on Anchos grills lol)! I do hope if you haven't heard of Anchos or have but haven't tried it, you really should. It's a rare gem of our little City of Riverside. I'd love to hear your comments. I recommend the Steak Ranchero... "Diet tomorrow...Anchos today!" PS) The Kings DOMINATED the Oilers last night! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! #GKG
